New Beginnings
Description
World Premiere of a New Work by the California Symphony’s 2010-2013 Young American Composer-in-Residence
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with 16-year-old Rieko Tsuchida
Shostakovitch’s Symphony No. 5
The California Symphony proudly presents the first of three world premieres by its 7th Young American Composer-in-Residence. Founded in 1991, this groundbreaking program has commissioned 24 new American works to date. The only one in the world designed to fill the gap between formal training and the reality of writing for an actual orchestra, emerging composers are allowed to hone their craft using a professional orchestra as their laboratory. For our season finale, Maestro Barry Jekowsky will also introduce another emerging talent: Rieko Tsuchida, a sixteen-year-old San Francisco Conservatory of Music piano student who performed at Carnegie Hall last spring after winning the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition.
