Details:
Steve Tyrell – the Grammy-winning voice behind some of the most popular movie tunes of the last decade – will perform with the California Symphony at the 11th annual “Target Pops on the Plaza” free community concert in Concord on September 11, 2010.

Widely credited with making classic pop standards popular again, Tyrell has been called “…one of the most exquisite voices on the national nightclub circuit” by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Yet his career as an entertainer did not take off until the age of 50. In 1991 the former record executive, who had spent a decade working with the great songwriter Burt Bacharach, just happened to record a demo of the Sinatra standard, “The Way You Look Tonight,” for the film “Father of the Bride. According to the Houston Chronicle, he was meant to be a stand-in for another singer. “Instead the producers loved the earthy, soulful tone of his voice. It was a fluke entry into a singing career.”

Besides recording songs for films like the “Something’s Gotta Give,” starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson, and “Did You Hear about the Morgans?,” with Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyrell tours the country. Along the way, he’s appeared with The Boston Pops and the New York Pops, and performed on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” and “The Today Show.”

At the request of the Sinatra family and Quincy Jones, Tyrell was the featured performer with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at their season opening concert in which Frank Sinatra was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Also at the request of the Sinatra family, he reprised that performance this past May at Carnegie Hall. It was one of the rare times the family has reached into the vault of original Sinatra arrangements to share them with another artist.

Setting the stage for his first appearance in Contra Costa County, “Target Pops on the Plaza”’ will pair Tyrell with California Symphony Music Director Barry Jekowsky, who early in his career played percussion for one of the original crooners – Tony Bennett. Before beginning his career as a symphony conductor, Jekowsky also frequently performed in Broadway orchestras for Tony award-winning musicals like “Man of La Mancha” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.”

This year’s “Target Pops on the Plaza” will also feature ABC7 news anchor Dan Ashley as master of ceremonies and Target’s lovable mascot Bullseye in another fun-filled two hours of Broadway, film, classical and operatic musical favorites, patriotic standards and cartoon classics. The concert will also commemorate the 9th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11, and honor the brave men and women who have given their lives to preserve our freedom.

Target Pops on the Plaza is being hosted by the City of Concord, home of the world-renowned Concord Records, Jazz Festival, Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. Sponsors of this year’s event include the City of Concord, Target, Chevron, Thomas J. Long Foundation, Contra Costa Times, Tesoro, Concord Disposal, Pacific Farmers Market, and Todos Santos Business Association. Links:
