9th California Gold Mush Lake Davis Sled Dog & Snowshoe Race
Description
Sponsored by the Soroptimists International of Portola, Fourteen Angels Foundation, Inc. and the Sierra Nevada Dog Drivers & Plumas-Graeagle Business Alliance. On Friday from 3 to 4:30 P.M. a vet check will be held at the Portola City Park this is a chance to meet some of the dogs and their Driver. Training for the handlers will also take place from 3 to 4:30 P.M.
The event will be staged at Camp Five for higher elevation for dog about 3.5 miles west of Portola so you can see the start of the sled dog teams and end of many of the races. Activities will be based out of Chalet View Lodge (behind on the golf course and south towards the river): Demonstrations at Noon: "Teach Your Dog to Pull" to "Skate & Bike with Your Dog", Static display of Working Dogs in War and Peace, Snowshoe rentals: 200 yd. Fun Run with your Dog Fundraiser; 2K Snowshoe Race, be a passenger in a sled for the 2-Mile Freight Race: Fundraiser for the Nevada Dog Drivers, Inc. Refreshments and weekend barbeque will be provided by the Soroptimist International of Portola.
Pets at race site must not distract team dogs.
Saturday evening a movie night featuring Disney's "Iron Will" Mushing Movie will also be offered for kids of all ages at the meeting room (upstairs) at Chalet View Lodge at 6 P.M. Refreshments available.
Also at 6 P.M. is the "Meet the Mushers" Dinner, music and Silent Auction at the Calpine Elks Lodge.
