Maestra Productions was founded on a longstanding dedication to telling impactful stories centered on literacy, education, and social change. This work began with the 2011 release of MAESTRA, a feature documentary highlighting the experiences of the youngest women teachers from Cuba’s 1961 Literacy Campaign. The film has reached audiences around the world through screenings in theaters, classrooms, and organizations, earning international recognition, multiple awards, and distribution by Women Make Movies. The project’s significance is further preserved through an archive of interviews and research materials housed at the University of North Carolina.
Building on this foundation, Maestra Productions released Silvio Rodríguez: Mi Primera Tarea in 2020, featuring the celebrated musician’s personal reflections on the Literacy Campaign. The film screened at major international festivals and is now distributed for educational use by New Day Films and available on Kanopy. Established in Summer 2023 as the production arm of the Literacy Project, Maestra Productions continues to develop films exploring themes of literacy, education, art, and social justice. With new projects underway including a documentary on Paulo Freire the company remains committed to producing original works while supporting like-minded filmmakers as executive producers.
